Importing poverty

"Why is liberal California the poverty capital of America?" asked the headline in the Los Angeles Times.

It's imported.

Now then, there are many ways to measure poverty.

The writer of the column -- Kerry Jackson -- used the Census Bureau's supplemental poverty measure, an Obama administration innovation that takes cost of living into account.

For example, San Francisco's myriad rules on housing and rents have pushed the cost of housing high, which benefits homeowners who can reap huge windfalls when they sell and move out of San Francisco. Those rules make living in San Francisco expensive.

By this measurement, California is No. 1 in poverty with a poverty rate of 23.8%.

That is well above runner-up Nevada at 19.8%.

The nation average is 16% using the supplemental poverty measure.

Kerry Jackson seems flummoxed by why California has so much poverty:
It’s not as though California policymakers have neglected to wage war on poverty. Sacramento and local governments have spent massive amounts in the cause. Several state and municipal benefit programs overlap with one another; in some cases, individuals with incomes 200% above the poverty line receive benefits. California state and local governments spent nearly $958 billion from 1992 through 2015 on public welfare programs, including cash-assistance payments, vendor payments and “other public welfare,” according to the Census Bureau. California, with 12% of the American population, is home today to about one in three of the nation’s welfare recipients.
But that is why California has so much "poverty."

Democrats want impoverished people who rely on the state -- The Man -- for sustenance. Wards of the state tend to vote for the party of the state.

California also leads the nation in illegal aliens, as 6% of its population are in the United States illegally.

They come here because the federal government overturned Proposition 187, which would have denied public services to illegal aliens.

12.3% of public school students (one in eight) are illegal aliens. You can see why teacher unions oppose enforcing the law, as public school spending is based on part on the number of students.

Jackson wrote:
With a permanent majority in the state Senate and the Assembly, a prolonged dominance in the executive branch and a weak opposition, California Democrats have long been free to indulge blue-state ideology while paying little or no political price. The state’s poverty problem is unlikely to improve while policymakers remain unwilling to unleash the engines of economic prosperity that drove California to its golden years.
Of course.

That is the plan.

California is a socialist state. Democrats are a socialist party.

True, Margaret Thatcher said, "Socialist governments traditionally do make a financial mess. They always run out of other people’s money."

But Democrats figure that by the time that happens, they will be long gone.

Weeds never worry about what happens after they die.

  1. I have to admit, Big D, I sipped a big ol' mug of Schadenfruede while reading those stories of the mudslides. If Cali wants to secede, let em. Wouldn't bother me a bit.

  2. One of these days you'll be able to ask a liberal to hold his hand up in front of his face and when you ask him what he sees he'll tell you he's not sure. Literally.

    1. I left 10 years ago after 25 years there. Almost everyone I knew followed.

What people that do not live there do not understand is what it does to one mentally. It is a state run on peer pressure and bullying, not laws. It looks nice from afar. But the reality of dealing with people that lie and make it up as they go along multiple times a day gets to everyone that can think. And it is far and away the worst place in the US to raise children. The kids come out airheads.

Trust me - leave for another area and give it a month or so. At which point you will feel normal again.

    2. Peer pressure and bullying. Ken, I LOVE that line. No better succinct description of Proggies have I heard in a long LONG time. Well played, sir.

  4. Republicans ran CA for 125 years and made it the envy of the world.

Democrats have had it for 25 years and turned it into a Third World sewer.

    (is that racist?)

    1. That is true and very well stated!

For many Californians, retirement consists of selling your home for an exorbitant price to a young FaceBook, Google or Apple employee then moving to a low tax state.

    2. And then voting for Dems to have more of the same.

  5. California is importing illegal aliens and raising the taxes to support them so high that the resident liberals are leaving. The problem is that they are taking their values and voting preferences with them to infect other states. For the protection of the other states California must be quarantined. It will either cure itself or kill itself. - Elric

    1. When they end up asking to be bailed out they should lose their status as a state and be a territory again. No voting representation in DC until they are allowed back into the union, and that dependent on them being solvent for, say, fifty years without federal assistance. If they want to secede, fine. But we keep all federal lands and installations.

    B I N G O !

This is what turned California. It is spreading, and is the reason health care costs continue to skyrocket with no end in sight.

As long as people come into the US illegally, then they and their offspring will be guaranteed free health care and other services. Most work off the books, and get aid anyway. Those that "pay" taxes are taught to claim relatives outside the US that they say they support, resulting in getting such large tax credits that they get refunds far larger then the so-called taxes they pay....i.e. they get even more aid.

Please keep this in mind as the DACA debate continues, with the Democrats slow-walking any sort of border security (and amnesty guarantees that more and more people will make the trek to sneak into the US).

Most elections are won by small margins. The Democrats want amnesty and subsequently voting rights for illegals. That will give them enough votes to tilt outcomes and allow them to take power. The game is to overwhelm social programs - including Social Security and Medicare. At that point the way to get money to fund them is to take over US businesses, thereby taking the profits being kept by evil capitalists, and using them to fund the government services. Wala...Socialism! We are then dependent on the government for where we work to what we're allowed to have. It's that simple. And California is leading the way.

Additionally, in a state where 45% vote Dem and 45% vote Repub, the remaining 10% are gov't workers bribed with steady jobs and plush benefits by the Dem Party.

  10. According to the US Census there were about 2.355 million illegals in CA in 2016. If it isn't double that I would be shocked. It doesn't take illegals a New York minute to figure out how to work for cash AND collect gubment benefits.

    1. Not just illegals. I've known natural-born US citizens who work off the books. Don't know if they collected benefits, but I know they worked off the books.

  11. Where did the figure 6% for illegals in Calif. come from? I live here. I don't know accurate figure - no one does, but it's way higher than 6%.

    1. That's the official number of illegals.

I remember a short story where the protagonist was being smuggled into principality. On board the boat were illicit goods, all with their "smuggled goods" customs stamp indicating that the contraband duty had been paid.

  12. "If you subsidize something, you will tend to get more of it. California subsidizes poverty. San Francisco is one of the most expensive places to live but they give poor people free/cheap housing so they can stay there.
