“I love Trump for being frank with Africans”

Conan O'Brien went to a resort in Haiti to prove it is not a s***hole country.

The people who live there know better than the tourists.

Conan's trip was too clever by half.

Inadvertently, he showed himself as a white guy millionaire with a Harvard degree sipping an adult beverage from some sort of coconut shell -- while nearby, one million native people are still without sewers eight years after the earthquake.

How is this different from the colonialism Haitians overthrew 227 years ago?

He acts like the Great White Father, protecting his lessers from an evil man who may or may not in private have called their country a s***hole.

Haitians don't need some TV celebrity's protection.

They need sewers.

People in Africa also know some of their countries are the opposite of a garden spot.

President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda said in a speech opening his parliament: I love Trump because he tells Africans frankly. The Africans need to solve their problems, the Africans are weak.

From the Washington Post:
“America has got one of the best presidents ever. Mr. Trump. I love Trump,” the Ugandan president said, according to video published by local media outlets. As his audience laughed nervously, Museveni continued: “I love Trump because he talks to Africans frankly. I don't know if he is misquoted or whatever, but when he speaks I like him because he speaks frankly.”
Museveni went on to say Africa needed to be stronger. “It is the fault of the Africans that they are weak. They have this huge continent,” he said. “If you look at Africa, Africa is 12 times the size of India, in terms of land area, lots of resources, and the population is growing now. Why can't we make Africa strong?”
[SKIP]
Museveni has directly praised Trump before — just weeks ago in a New Year's address, the Ugandan leader said he liked Trump. The U.S. president has also offered some limited praise to Uganda, listing its “incredible strides in the battle against HIV/AIDS” as one of a number of positive aspects to the relationship between the United States and Africa in a meeting with African leaders at the United Nations last year.
Bush too helped Africans fight AIDS. Obama cut back on the program.

Liberals love to denounce colonialism  even as they sip mai tais on the beaches, while the people live in squalor a few miles away.

  1. God, I love a guy who tells the truth. The President of Uganda is now my second favorite President.

PS If you're a Civil War buff, you've heard of the Knights of the Golden Circle. Well, the Golden Circle was a real thing, basically an empire that would have stretched from Texas to Colombia and Venezuela and would have included the Caribbean (some maps show it also encompassing the entire west and north coasts of South America, the most populous area of the Brazilian coast, and British Colombia) as part of the US, many of those areas achieving statehood.

They may have had something. Those places would be better off with a big influx of American knowhow and discipline.

    1. I still equate Uganda with Idi Amin. Not any more. Opening my eyes to what sounds like a glimmer of hope in Africa.

    3. Wow. Awhile ago I read an article about Jefferson Davis's interest, in case they couldn't get Britain involved on their side, of relocating to S.America. This was so long ago I don't remember if it would have been per treaty (they were an independent country in their minds at the time afterall) or helping a local juanta ?.

  2. Yeah, I've been to several beach resorts in Mexico as well, and they are nice. The rest of the country? Shithole!

    1. They're nice as long as there's a big, tall gate around them with soldiers carrying powerful weapons.

The big difference between British colonialism and that of the other European states before the 1960's going back 400 or so years is that the British tried to build civilizations while the others were interested only in extraction.

The liberal approach to other nations is similar to the Germans or Belgians where their appreciation of other nations is concerned. They go to resorts owned by international (cosmopolitan) corporations and extract goods and services from those countries while ignoring the squalor therein, and say what great places they are. And how we should be more like them.

Likewise, when it comes to trade agreements, the big internationals are the beneficiaries. And the commoners on both sides of the border get screwed.

  4. Hey Conan-look at the hills above you-they aren't supposed to look like Death Valley..
Thank you, what is infuriating that even legit organizations have this "prime directive'" when it comes to a place like Haiti. Having been on a mission board to Haiti. No one goes beyond
to help. Heck outhouses would be aq step up..
If I was a Starship Captain, I'd be in
the Admiral's office setting next Kirk:
"McCoy, huh? Any relation to Leonard McCoy?" TG McCoy

  5. Haiti ranks #2 (behind India) in the fraction of its populace that does its #2 business out in public. If that doesn't define sh|thole, I don't know what does. Instead of decamping to a gated tourist enclave, perhaps Conan should have stayed with the locals where they live and on their terms to get the full flavor of the real Haitian Experience.

  8. When civilization meets primitives it never works out well for the primitives. They either get pushed out or "enslaved and exploited" which is Leftist for "we tried to civilize them."

    1. ‘Fraid I gotta disagree with that civliization-primitive outcome.

In one word ... “Western Europe”. (Okay, that’s two words, but like Bullwinkle, I’m a heavy tipper.). At any rate, the meeting of civilized Western Europeans and primitive Middle Easterners is not going to end well for the former.

  10. Maybe Uganda can grant the Dear Orange Leader asylum when he skips out of town after his money laundering catches up with him? Would be too sweet for him to finish out his days in Africa. Though most of America is still hoping for the orange jumpsuit option.

    3. And you're too stupid to realize the longer Mueller's investigation goes on the better it looks for Trump (even Strozk admits there's nothing there in his e-mails), and the worse it looks for Obama and his comrades. I can't imagine how sweet it would be to see Obama and/or Hillary doing a perp walk.

Trump is everybody's hero. Which is why it's understandable you want to retain anonymity.

  11. The first step to fixing a problem is to admit that you have one. Good on President Museveni: I hope he's the man that gets them moving in a positive direction that can stay the course.

  13. Very good post except for one nitpick. The Haitians aren't native to the island. They're descendants of African slaves.
