Two weeks later, CNN's brand has a minus 12 score, while MSNBC is at minus 6 and Fox News is at zero, according to You Gov.
Technically, Zucker may be correct. On Zucker's watch, CNN already flushed its reputation down the toilet.
In January 2016, Fox News was at plus one, CNN at minus one, and MSNBC at minus nine.
But while MSNBC's credibility rose eight points, CNN's plunged eleven points -- a nineteen-point gap that translates into MSNBC surpassing CNN in the ratings.
Two weeks ago, Variety reported:
Zucker said CNN conducted its largest-ever brand survey last month out of a desire to gauge whether Trump’s broadsides about CNN serving up “fake news” were having a lasting impact on prospective viewers.
“There has been no diminution whatsoever in the CNN brand,” Zucker said. “It’s as strong as it’s ever been. It’s incredibly trusted and we see no impact whatsoever in all of those attacks on the CNN brand.”Left out of the report was that CNN already destroyed its credibility by lying and exaggerating about President Trump.
CNN’s negative acceleration point happened in mid-October 2016, around the time Anderson Cooper interviewed Melania Trump, notably discussing her husband’s famous “Access Hollywood” tape. Also at that time, a local North Carolina Republican office was firebombed, causing conservative-leaning media to pounce on CNN for suggesting Trump’s rhetoric spurred the incident.
While CNN’s perception levels steadily declined for three months beginning in August, the scores fell even more sharply at that mid-October point, hitting bottom around Election Day.
Even a few weeks after Election Day, another hit prevented CNN from recovering, coinciding with its reports on spotting fake news and its impact on the election. CNN itself was the victim of a fake news scare in late November, when somebody tweeted that the network broadcast pornography instead of an episode of “Anthony Bordain’s Parts Unknown.”
Since these incidents, CNN has had trouble fully recovering.Yes, going with a wild story about Trump hiring hookers to pee on a bed Obama slept in in Russia makes a mockery of a network that purports to be a news channel.
The network kept its Baghdad bureau open by not telling the truth about Saddam Hussein -- confessing only as U.S. forces prepared to oust him from power.
Now CNN thinks it can succeed by not telling the truth about President Trump.
