Instead she used her time to dump on President Trump.
President Trump made sure those millions who did not watch the Golden Globes knew she dissed on him.
He is the Republican and conservative who knows how the media plays the fame, and can shove it right back at them, twice the distance.
From the New York Times:
President-elect Donald J. Trump dismissed Meryl Streep as “a Hillary lover” early Monday morning after the actress, in a speech at the Golden Globes award ceremony, denounced him as a bully who disrespected and humiliated others.
Mr. Trump, in a brief telephone interview, said he had not seen Ms. Streep’s remarks or other parts of the Globes ceremony, which were broadcast on NBC, but he added that he was “not surprised” that he had come under attack from “liberal movie people.”From a different New York Times story on the same subject:
Turning attention away from her and toward Donald J. Trump, Meryl Streep used her acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes to call out the president-elect for appearing to mock a disabled New York Times reporter in 2015, and warned that a free press would need to be defended. Ms. Streep campaigned for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.
Some conservative commentators immediately criticized her decision to bring politics so vividly into the show. But the room roundly applauded her remarks, which included a plea to support the Committee to Protect Journalists.
No one is surprised that a Hollywood actress would use the public stage to make a political statement. The public expects it ever since
Conservatives stopped watching this crap after John Wayne finally received an Oscar.
So President Trump made sure his supporters knew what went down.
And while the media had to report the flare-up, the media reveled in it.
From the Associated Press:
A top aide to Donald Trump says actress Meryl Streep should have supported the president-elect instead of denouncing him from the stage of the Golden Globes. From Real Clear Politics:
KELLYANNE CONWAY: I'm glad Meryl Streep has such a passion for the disabled because I didn't hear her weigh in or I didn't even hear her use her platform last night, Ainsley, to give the shoutout to the mentally challenged boy who last week was tortured live on Facebook for half an hour, by four young African-American adults who were screaming racial and anti-Trump expletives and forcing him to put his head in toilet water.NPR had a piece.
The Washington Post had a piece.
Politico had a piece.
My guess is reporters thought this helped The Resistance -- which just about every one of them has joined.
But the opposite is true.
As Glenn Reynolds said: "You know, I think people are beginning to question Hollywood’s authority. UFC’s Dana White fires back at ‘uppity 80-year-old’ Meryl Streep after MMA, NFL dig."
These vanity screed turns the public off to liberalism in general, and Hollywood hectoring America in particular.
President Trump wants to remind the public of this.
And so he trolled the media, and so the story lasts another news cycle.
But The Resistance is quickly running out of steam.
And it is doomed to fail because its rhetoric is so out of line.
What happens when the man you insist is Hitler does not build concentration camps? Or annex Austria? Or invade Poland?
Crying wolf works only if there is a wolf.
The same with crying Hitler.
Streep is a particular weird personality. Her greatest role was in "Sophie's Choice," which had a woman choosing in a concentration camp which of her children would die -- a decision that haunted her and made her survival in body only.
Oddly enough, she is very pro-choice, which allows women to kill their babies.
Please read "Trump the Press," in which I skewer media experts who wrongly predicted Trump would lose the Republican nomination. "Trump the Press" is available as a paperback, and on Kindle.
It covers the nomination process only. The general election will be covered in a sequel.
