Did You Pass the “Muslim Ban” Test?

This weekend was an intelligence test for conservatives, particularly those who only reluctantly – or even never – voted for Donald Trump.

If you are such a conservative – or not – let’s see how you did.

1. Did you call it a Muslim Ban?

If so, you were wrong. It isn’t.

President Trump issued an executive order to temporarily ban immigration from seven nations: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.

While all the nations are majority Muslim, religion is not the reason for the ban. War and terrorism are. The latter six nations are war-torn, while the first one is Iran. I am not sure why we allow travel with Iran.

The seven nations represent 12.2 percent of the world’s Muslim population.

The nations were selected by the Obama administration. The Trump administration likely will select and target other nations as we go along. While this executive order likely was drafted months ago – transition teams do more than recommend personnel – it is the beginning of an effort to improve the vetting of visitors and migrants.

2. Did you call it un-American? Unconstitutional? Illegal?

If so, you were wrong because Congress fully authorizes such action, and in fact requires the president temporarily ban immigration from nations under 8 U.S. Code § 1182 - Inadmissible aliens.

The law specifically lists who should be kept out (drug dealers, money launderers, terrorists, and many other categories of people who are bad news).

“Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or non-immigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate,” says paragraph (f).

“Whenever the Attorney General finds that a commercial airline has failed to comply with regulations of the Attorney General relating to requirements of airlines for the detection of fraudulent documents used by passengers traveling to the United States (including the training of personnel in such detection), the Attorney General may suspend the entry of some or all aliens transported to the United States by such airline.”

I broke it into two paragraphs to make it easier to read. I’m like that.

3. Did you call it unprecedented?

If so, you were wrong.

President Obama in 2011 temporarily banned immigration from Iraq.

4. Did you say America should always take in refugees?

If so, you were wrong because America has a long history of turning away refugees.

Just this month, Barack Obama banned the automatic acceptance of Cuban refugees. Also, he had a de facto policy of not accepting Christian, Jewish, and other religious minorities in these seven Muslim majority nations.

Far from banning refugees, the order gives priority to people who are the most likely to be religious refugees.

5. Did you say executive orders are unconstitutional?

If so, you were wrong because the Constitution specifically makes the president the chief executive of the federal government. Executive orders are how a president communicates with his various department heads. Often those orders merely authorize the Cabinet secretary to do what he wants to do.

Rest assuredly, General John Kelly, the new head of Homeland Security, believes that this executive order will help Make America Safe Again. This policy is neither Islamophobic, nor xenophobic, but rather a necessary step toward securing our borders.

Contrary to popular belief, Ellis Island was set up not as a welcome center. It was a screening place. We sent back to Europe the ill, the crazy, the criminal, and the anarchistic.

The poem on the Statue of Liberty is very nice, but it is neither the law or the policy. Americans want people who wish to assimilate and be Americans, not strangers from another culture who want to reshape our nation in their image.

So why would so many intelligent, good-hearted conservatives get so many things wrong? I will tell you in four words.

They believed the media.

For decades – even pre-dating the Reagan era – conservatives have complained about the media. And yet throughout this presidential election cycle, and now in his presidency, a certain segment of conservatives has trusted every negative media report about Trump.

As he appoints his Cabinet and turns his campaign promises into policy, I keep looking for one liberal person or idea in the package. I cannot find one.

He is no saint. He brags a lot. And his feuds bother some people.

But he is a workaholic who is getting the job done.

May I suggest applying the 24-Hour Rule to The Donald? This is what I use on any breaking news. Before formulating an opinion about what looks to be a terrorist act and such, I wait 24 hours because the initial news reports often get major parts of the story wrong.

As was the case on the “Muslim Ban.”

Please read "Trump the Press," in which I skewer media experts who wrongly predicted Trump would lose the Republican nomination. "Trump the Press" is available as a paperback, and on Kindle.

It covers the nomination process only. The general election is covered in a sequel, "Trump the Establishment," which will be published in paperback on February 7.

  1. Leave it to you, Don, to put it all so simply so even morons (like me) can understand it. I'm hoping others will follow suit, but it'll probably be a few days! Keep up the good work!

  3. The Lefties (funded by Nazi collaborator George Soros) need to fill their pieholes with hummus and STFU. This is one good reason why folks voted for Trump and someone (who was it?) once said, "Elections have consequences." - Elric

  4. Excellent post.

I reckon the 24 hour rule will again be proven right in regards to the Quebec mosque shooting.

    1. Yup. After our idiot press has fallen all over themselves.
Yeah, right. Canadians are bloodthirsty Nazis going around doing ethnic cleansing.
Something I fantasize about is real only in the mind of a delusional liberal. The difference between insanity and sanity is being able to realize a fantasy as such.

  5. They rallying cry for this executive order is 9-11. Fair enough, yet three countries which produced 18 of the 19 terrorists are not on the ban list and still no one can answer why ... only that his has nothing to do with Trump's extensive business ties to those three countries, notably Saudi Arabia which produced 15 of the 9-11 terrorists. You know the country which gave so much money to the Clinton Foundation.
No US citizen has died on US soil since 9-11 at the hands of any refugee from the currently banned countries.
I know someone who did not pass the "Muslim Ban" test. The person who wrote,
"Barack Obama on Sunday night seized the Muslim attack on more than 30 people in San Bernardino, California, to push his political agenda.
Donald Trump on Monday afternoon seized on the attack to offer a solution: Stop the immigration of Muslims. His proposal makes perfect sense. Muslim terrorist organizations are abusing the West's passive immigration laws in order to infiltrate our nations.
Liberals have lulled America into a false sense of security, which on 9-11 proved fatal for nearly 3,000 people.
    Screw it.
We can ban foreign Muslims from entry if we want to.
We can also restrict travel to Saudi Arabia and other terrorist-friendly nations.
The best way to protect Muslim Americans from any backlash is to reduce the terrorism that may trigger such actions.
Continuing to allow Chicago-born Islamic State soldiers to fly to Saudi Arabia for instructions and training?
Letting mail order terrorist brides in from Pakistan to assist their "radicalized" husbands in destruction and mayhem?"

    1. Saudi Arabia is not a friend of America in the same sense Israel is, but at least the rulers of that country are not insane, the way the mullahs of Iran are. Iran is a known enemy of the US, which makes it absurd that the US issues more visas to Iran than any other country in the Middle East (more than 35 thousand in 2015). If Trump were to suddenly marginalize Saudi, Iran would quickly become the dominant Muslim power state in the Middle East, with no other power broker to counterbalance it. And until Trump's efforts at home make the US truly energy independent of oil imports from the Middle East, it's probably best for him to move slowly on actions that are directed at Saudi Arabia's financial support of extreme forms of Islam. Step by step, one at a time. The day will come, but just not now.

    2. So Saudi Arabia's public beheadings of Christians, gays, and adulterers while aiding and abetting would-be terrorists is proof the rulers are not insane? Got it.

    3. The Saudis are long overdue for some kind, ANY kind of adverse action due to their perpetual funding of global Jihad. This ain't it and it may well be because they have bought everyone but heck, it's only Week 2.

  7. And to dovetail off the last remark, I worry that your common sense will get you thrown in jail some day!!! We just can't have logic and facts ruling the world, ya know!!!

Thanks for a great article--one of many. (By the way, I failed your test--YAY!!)

  8. "Just this month, Barack Obama banned the automatic acceptance of Cuban refugees. Also, he had a de facto policy of not accepting Christian, Jewish, and other religious minorities in these seven Muslim majority nations"

And beginning this past September through Inauguration Day, Obama got more than 4,500 illegal Haitians deported back to Haiti. Fewer than 200 people were temporarily inconvenienced by Trump's Rules, and the entire Left exploded in rage. F' them. The violent fight between different branches of Middle East Islam should stay in the Middle East. It's crazy that some people want to import it here. There are benign forms of Islam in other parts of the globe that manage to live (mostly, if not entirely) peacefully side by side with other religions, but not those sects from the Middle East. If Canada wants to take them in, they are welcome to them. But not here, not now, not ever.

  9. Question: How many of the countries banned by Trump themselves ban Jews?

I think we all know the answer to that.
