Catholics got the last laugh as they swung nine points moving from Democrats (Obama won Catholics by two) to Trump (he won Catholics by seven).
This was then. From the Daily Caller:
“They must be attracted to the systematic thought and severely backwards gender relations and must be totally unaware of Christian democracy,” Center for American Progress fellow John Halpin wrote to Podesta and communications director Jennifer Palmieri in 2011, in reference to conservative Catholics.
“I imagine they think it is the most socially acceptable politically conservative religion,” Palmieri responded. “Their rich friends wouldn’t understand if they became evangelicals.” Palmieri and Podesta are both Catholics.
“Excellent point,” Halpin responds. “They can throw around ‘Thomistic’ thought and ‘subsidiarity’ and sound sophisticated because no one knows what the hell they’re talking about.”
Thomistic thought refers to the philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas, the 13th century philosopher whose Summa Theologica is widely considered the seminal text of Catholic theology. Subsidiarity is a tenant of Catholic social thought, popular with conservatives, which argues that large and complex entities should not take action when a smaller, less complex entity is capable of doing the same work.Look who's not laughing now.
From Al Smith (1928) to Al Gore (2000), Democrats generally owned the Catholic vote. President Bush 43 won it back, but then it went to Obama.
From Crux, a Catholic blog:
Now that the voting is over, however, preliminary results indicate Trump decisively won a majority of those self-identifying as Catholics, by 52 to 45 percent.
By contrast, President Barack Obama won Catholics narrowly, by a margin of 50 to 48 percent, in 2012.
Evangelicals flocked to Trump in far more overwhelming numbers, by a massive 81 to 16 percent.
Trump also outperformed expectations -- and the 2012 precedent -- among Hispanic and African American voters, while Clinton under-performed with both groups. In fact, with Hispanics, Trump bested Romney’s 2012 performance by two points, while Clinton dropped six points compared to Obama’s 2012 showing. And just for good measure, the Church Militant observed:
The crushing defeat suffered by the Party of Death was apocalyptic in its vastness. Never in living memory has the Party of Death been so obliterated and made low as it was on this Election Day.
Faithful Catholics nationwide had been praying a 54-day Rosary Novena and then added strict fasting to the spiritual regimen in the week leading up to Election Day, pleading with Heaven to intervene and prevent the election of Hillary.
In many ways, it was literally a "Hail Mary," last-ditch attempt that would require a miracle. As has been the case throughout history, the Queen of Heaven heard the cries of Her children and provided the miracle.Never underestimate the Queen of Heaven. She sent us Lech Walesa, Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, and Pope John Paul II to wipe out the Soviet Union.
Two divorces should have been a deal breaker for Trump, but angels learned a long time ago not to be too picky when you are fighting a Party of Death. They'll get back to Trump later on those divorces, just as God dealt with David over getting rid of Uriah to get Bathsheba.
Hint to Democrats: Mocking the Lord is a very, very, very, terrible game plan.
