Conrad Black schools Bill Kristol and John Podhoretz

Billionaire Conrad Black, who made his fortune buying newspapers till he had the world's third longest chain -- and then selling them of before the Internet squished circulation -- evidently has enough pull (donation money speaks) to get the National Review to publish his pro-Trump writings.

This time he took care of Bill Kristol (editor of the Weekly Standard) and John Podhoretz (head of Commentary magazine without even naming them.

Ostensibly the article was a reaction to the Democratic Party's over-reaction to Trump saying pussy eleven years ago by reminding people of this:
The Billy Bush clip released on Friday was extremely crude and boastful, almost disgusting for the seeker of the presidency of the U.S., even though it was eleven years old. It was not as distasteful as the antics of a number of presidents, including JFK’s telling an intern to fellate one of his key aides in the White House swimming pool, and asking her to lie down in his official car so she would be invisible to the British prime minister (Harold MacMillan); Bill Clinton’s receiving oral sex in the Oval Office while ostensibly conducting government business on the telephone; or much of the routine conversation of Lyndon Johnson.
And of course there was this:
Teddy Kennedy was considered a serious candidate for president even after he drunkenly drove his car into a pond, drowning a female assistant, and left the scene of the accident. The Trump video from eleven years ago was tawdry and contemptible, as he has acknowledged, but has nothing to do with being president.
But why would a man of Black's wealth bother with this subject?

This passage:
The largely neoconservative intellectual Right has led even the Clintonians and defecting traditional conservatives in denouncing Trump as a primeval, knuckle-dragging monster, repulsive in every detail. As they toil for their ancient Clinton foes, they think, like many French World War II collaborators with the Nazis, that they are saving the integrity of their cause — in this case, thoughtful conservatism. They bewail the acceptance of Trump by other, allegedly less principled conservatives.
They have read themselves into oblivion. Because Norman Podhoretz and Irving Kristol came quickly and cogently from the soft left to the Reagan right, where they were graciously received, and blended well with the such traditional conservatives as Bill Buckley and even such paleoconservatives as Pat Buchanan, they earned some of the stardom of the great Reagan victories. Whichever party wins this election, the heirs of the Reagan intellectual Right who have noisily endorsed Hillary as the lesser of evils will be wearing sackcloth and ashes and speaking inaudibly in the wilderness for a long time. To the Democrats, they are useful idiots; to the Republicans, they are deserters in battle, turncoats. As Laura Ingraham said after the debate on Sunday, “They will go back to their think tanks and devise policies that will never be enacted unless those of us who are trying to defeat Hillary Clinton are successful.” Those of the conservative intellectual Right who have rallied to Trump, with reservations noted, and those who have sat it out discreetly, will have the task of rebuilding the intellectual Right. It will not be easy under either scenario.
As the cliché, that left a mark.

His column had a happy ending, "It is good to remember that Donald Trump is not a monster and that Hillary Clinton is not a witch, and both surely would be better than the last two presidents, who by their failures have brought on this very nasty campaign. The election is now a bouncing (American) football and anything could happen."

  1. Mr. Black is always a good read and spot-on with his observations. Perhaps National Review is publishing his articles out of penance. When The Donald is elected there are going to be a lot of establishment Republicans and "conservative" pundits on the outside of his administration looking in. - Elric

  2. And the sanctimonious Johnny Maverick reach across the aisle and stab Republicans in the back McRINO once called his wife a c*nt during his '92 Senate race. His bad temper has always been accompanied by obscenities. Hypocrite!

  4. Trump said nothing any other guy ever said, so all the harrumphing about "extremely crude and boastful, almost disgusting" language is so two-faced as to be incredible.

He didn't say it to a woman and he didn't say it to a roomful of people. Hate to tell you, but that puts him head and shoulders among many who not only sought, with the Establishment's blessing, but won the top spot.

  5. Trump only said it. Bubba did it and Illary helped to cover for him.

  6. Black thinks and writes well, a gift. I'm sure the pusillanimous virtuists like Kristol and Jonah will not fade away if HC wins. They are supported by very rich intellectual Trump haters like the Kochs who are more addicted to old Bordeaux and rare Burgundy than the middle class. In the media, for them Things will go back to the way they were before. They will fill Fox panels, aw shucks smirking and bragging about their genius and integrity while criticizing every move Clinton makes to show their bona fides. Then they will make bon mot policy recommendations just as useless and hollow as the ones they made under Obama. The Senate will pay no attention whatsoever to any of their pip squeak la resistance and give her most of what she wants including the rabid SC Constitution hater she is sure to pick because not only will they will be afraid not to do so(she woman!), but They will want pork money to spend to enhance their own reelection prospects. They know if they give her gifts, she will take care of them much better than Trump ever would, offerings she will share with them in the afterlife. Kristol and Friends will of course recommend some vanilla loser like Pense for the next Armageddon and the election will be declared over in May.
Only a Trump victory will change anything at all in America and the world. Change it or lose it.

    1. Anon for a while now but Surber and his loyal crowd always dismissed me as a quack because anything and everything "Republican" was wonderful and anything and everything "Democrat" was so evil. I am so glad Trump has opened the eyes of Surber and his Surbots that the only party ruling DC is the Wall Street Elite party. I’s also overjoyed to read that Surber will renounce his Republican affiliation if Trump loses (he's going to ... and badly). Then he and others can finally join us independents where I hope we can find a Trump with brains independent to bring down the Wall Street party (finally!!) in four years if it’s not too late. Hopefully Teapartyquack will come along too.

    3. Anon there are many of us who have had our eyes opened to the extent of the collusion between the two parties. It is a foregone conclusion that any chance Trump might have had is being extinguished by so-called "republican" leaders, on their own presidential nominee. Many of us did not want to believe the level of corruption and dry rot that exists at all levels of government but had to have our noses rubbed in it by the last few weeks. From the phony FBI probe of Hillary's secret server to arms sales to ISIS you would have to be nuts to think there has to be a better way. We can at least thank Trump for destroying Jeb Bush and the remnants of the GOP so that true opposition to the democrats may form.

  7. Black had me until his "happy ending". No way would Shrillary be better than the last two. All one has to consider is the Supreme Court to understand the disaster that she would inflict on the Nation.

  8. Think tank right might still be able to exist and shill for donors, but their credibility amongst the rank and file is shot. No credible intermediary between them and the public. Who are they going to disseminate their ideas through? No one reads them anymore.

    1. Actually, I don't think they are about the public. I don't know any myself, but they remind me some of the classicists duelling among themselves in learned journals over some obscure comment in a speech by Cicero. They knew the comment under debate was of no interest to anyone but them but they revelled in that very fact. A band of brothers in footnotes so to speak.

  9. I wish Conrad would have mentioned the snobbery that existed in the conservative movement towards St.Ronald Reagan even during the salad days. Snobs like William Rusher and George Will continually sniffed that Reagan was too pedestrian to truly hold the flag of conservatism. There has always been a class problem in the GOP. I feel the same snobbery is being exhibited towards Trump in a lot of ways. As imperfect a vessel (Man on man I could run a list of his many problems) he is the party nominee and opposes many of the things Hillary will now steamroll through a democratic congress (after the quislings like Ryan and McCain get done with it) It is sad to see the great National Review tarnish its reputation. I no longer care to see or read it ever again. They are dead to me.

  10. "Hillary Clinton is not a witch..." Coulda fooled me.

She sure avoids water. I thought that's because she was afraid someone would throw it on her. We all know what happens next!

Does anyone know if Hillary weighs more than a duck?

  11. Actually Black is off on one point. He grants that Hillary would be better than Barack and Bush. There is no reason to think this. There is every reason to think she will finish of the Bill of Rights. She also is a criminal via her handling of classified information, and a murder via her gunrunning in Libya and Syria. By what measure are we supposed to respect her. It is time to quit acting like she deserves anything but a striped jumpsuit. I immediately view those who counsel respect for her as misguided individuals. One might grant her respect as one would grant a stranger on the street. But as a leader of Americans, she is utterly depraved.

  12. Ted Kennedy and Chris Dodd sexually assaulted a waitress in a D. C. bar and bragged about it all over town. A Waitress Sandwich, they called their assault.

It's really amusing watching the Left have the vapors over a few locker room words that most of us heard when we were in the third grade.

  13. Will she ever visit her step-grandchildren in Little Rock? You know, the children of Bill's half-black son, Danney? Will she provide Bill's DNA to prove that Danney is not really his son by a black prostitute? For some strange reason I doubt that they will provide Bill's DNA sample.
