Global warming will end the Olympics

From the people who gave you vaccines cause autism (took them 12 years to retract it) comes "The last Summer Olympics? Climate change, health, and work outdoors."

The air is so thick with this junk that I feel like I am on a dairy farm...

From Lancet:
Climate change threatens human health in many ways, through heat waves, extreme weather events, and shifts in disease vectors, as well as economic and social stresses on populations living in or trying to escape areas affected by seawater intrusion, drought, lower agricultural productivity, and floods. In the short term, most of these impacts could be substantially ameliorated by actions to reduce background disease risks and other known causes of vulnerability. The world beyond 2050 poses increasingly difficult challenges, not only because of the inherent uncertainties in long-term predictions, but because the extent and speed of change might exceed society's ability to adapt.
What harm can an obscure, discredited, pseudo-science journal in England do?

From Gizmodo:
Olympic organizers have made climate change a central theme at the current games—and for good reason. A sobering new study shows that by the 2084 Olympics, rising temperatures will make it practically impossible for most cities to host the summer games.
In a new commentary published in The Lancet, a team led by Berkeley researchers Kirk Smith and John Balmes warn that the future of the summer Olympics is in jeopardy. Seventy years from now, only eight Northern Hemisphere cities outside of Europe will be cool enough to host the games, with only three cities in North America capable of serving as hosts.
The researchers arrived at this conclusion by developing a measurement, called the wet bulb global temperature (WBGT), that combines temperature, humidity, heat radiation, and wind. This tool was used in conjunction with two climate models to assess the viability of future host cities.
Wet bulb global temperature?

Obviously, normal thermometers do not produce the results they want. There is your sign that this is not only crap science but a fraud -- a scam -- three-card monte -- disguised as science.

  1. Study: A series of guesses that show what they want it to show. Predicting is easy, but the future has surprises up its sleeve. If it happens, then we hold the games in the southern hemisphere's Spring.

  2. Actually, when the next mini Ice Age arrives (the sun is sputtering out right now), they will start having two Winter Olympics, every other two years. Phelps is retiring at EXACTLY the right time. Imagine swimmers jumping off their platforms into...a frozen pond. That wouldn't be pretty.

  3. Global warming may not end them, bit, if Rio is an indicator, socialism will.

  5. These scam artists have been running their 'climate models' for decades. They have pi**ed away untold millions of taxpayer $$$ and essentially produced zero meaningful results from their work. All funding for this work and that is awarded via NOAA, NASA, NSF etc. should be terminated. It is a complete pseudoscience ripoff.

  7. Global warming is caused by people who fly around the world talking about global warming.

  9. It won't be globull warmening. It'll actually be various types of graft and other corruption will make it impossible to hold a summer olympics. And it's about time we stopped this foolishness, anyway.

  10. I would have thought it's the Winter Olympics that would be the more endangered by "global warming," not the Summer Olympics. In any case, the lack of venues to host the Olympics would be the least of the world's problems if anything these publicity-seeking folks predict is correct.

  11. wet bulb global temperature (WBGT)?

I guess Heat Index Global Temperature (HIGT) wold have been too revealing? But to be faire, the WBGT is more honest as it is a measure of how hot it feels to a person, instead of an actual physical measurement.

WBGT is apparently the wet-bulb temperature (the temperature with the thermometer in a wet sock ;-) which is how we get the relative humidity. Wet-bulb temperature is the lowest temperature that a surface can reach from water evaporation at the current relative humidity. Then you have to see if you are standing next to, say a big block wall that is radiating heat it picked up from the sun and the wind chill, due to wind disrupting the boundary layer or "epiclimate".

So WBGT is a measure of how global temperature feels to someone in their current humidity, hot asphalt/rock, wind conditions.

  12. I used to subscribe to the Lancet. It turned into SJW hell about ten years ago. By the way, 90% of medical research is pure crap being put out merely to pad curriculum vitae.

  13. The whole 'sea level rise' business, too, has been blown way out of proportion. The media will tell us that Miami "could be" under 2 feet of water by 2010. Well of course it could be; it "could be" under 4 feet of water; or it "could be" 40 feet above sea level. It "could be" anything. Rarely are any specific measurements attached to these alarmist fears regarding sea level. When they are, you learn that it is on the order of 1-2 mm/yr. Moreover, this is very difficult to measure, and coastal subsidence is occurring in most regions, and land is subsiding not sea level rising. More alarmism, all intended to keep the federal grant ripoff machine in high gear.
