To end the violence, the city hired 60 artists to paint murals on freeway underpasses. They call it the Oakland Super Heroes Mural Project, a collaboration with West Oakland middle-school students. The grant to fund he project went to the Attitudinal Healing Connection, a community group.
At 10:30 a,m. on September 29, someone shot and killed an artist, Antonio Ramos, 27, of Emeryville.
But wait. It gets worse.
Four days later, at 4:30 p.m., someone gunned down an ice cream vendor, Jasvir Singh, in his truck at Peach Street and 93rd Avenue. Police later identified Joevan Lopez, 23, as the assailant.
What the heck?
From the San Francisco Chronicle:
“There is something especially poignant when someone engaged in a positive and innocent act — like painting a mural or driving an ice cream truck — falls victim to senseless violence,” Oakland. Mayor Libby Schaaf said in a statement.Oakland has not had a Republican mayor since 1977. That's when its crime rate ratcheted up.
We will not stop inner city murder until we take it seriously. But evil men and women promote racial hatred and fear. They push a hip-hop culture that deifies thugs, while they demonize the police. Parts of our cities are Third World countries. It's time to shun "civil rights leaders" who promote lawlessness. They aid and abet crime because they want America to fail.
